Food Demonstrations

Cake and Bake demo

I’m an experienced food demonstrator whether working with a compère, compèring other people or presenting on my own. I specialise in all kinds of baking but have also demonstrated decorating, cooking and BBQ techniques. I can adapt my demos depending on the audience or season, e.g. Easter and Christmas baking, more complex bakes for experienced bakers, etc.

Outdoor cooking

kneading

I love being outdoors and try to spend as much time as possible camping, fishing and spending time in the fresh air. I’ve developed a very popular demonstration of how to make bread on a camping stove (recipe here), which can also work over an open fire. As an experienced and enthusiastic fly- and sea-fisherman, I’ve also demonstrated filleting and barbecuing techniques for fish. I can make pizzas and other flatbreads on BBQs and combine these with other BBQ techniques.

Baking history

Medieval demo

My wife Sarah specialised in medieval food history at university so we have developed a demonstration of medieval bread techniques (recipes here and here). This demo can be adapted for different historical periods and is popular for historic settings, as in Caerphilly Castle pictured above, or for history groups.

Baking with schools, colleges and youth groups

Bananas

As a parent governor, I am DBS checked and have done many demonstrations for schools and youth groups. For example, I’ve helped my daughters’ Rainbow and Brownie groups get their baking badges, taught 90 Year 3 students to make banana bread, led Year 2 baking workshops on a ‘Great Fire of London’ theme, taught bread techniques to catering students, worked with eating disorder centres, and given talks to school children and teachers about my Bake Off experience. I can adapt my baking demonstrations based on specific topics and themes or with a focus on the mathematics or science of baking.
